An Afternoon That Felt Like Forever

Growing up in a small village in the 1990s, every school day seemed to end with a new adventure.

One afternoon, my friends and I had made a simple plan: meet after school and play football on the village field. But as always, the ball was only the beginning.

Before long, we were playing hide-and-seek through the quiet streets. There were hardly any cars, and nobody worried about danger. We darted through neighbors’ gardens without a second thought. Instead of being told off, we were often greeted with a smile and sometimes even a glass of lemonade.

Later, we wandered to a nearby cornfield, where we built our own secret fort. Most of the wood and odd pieces of material came from new building sites around the village. The locals never chased us away. If anything, they would lend us a hammer, wish us good luck, and let our imaginations do the rest.

As the evening sky slowly turned orange and the first shadows stretched across the fields, we knew it was time to head home. No phones, no messages – just the feeling that dinner would already be waiting.

We walked through the front door with muddy shoes, scratched hands, and torn trousers. Our parents noticed every mark, but those were the signs of a day well spent.

Looking back, we didn’t realize it then, but that ordinary afternoon became one of the greatest memories of our childhood.
